Xbox Controller Elite Series 2 review: New version of the most expensive gamepad from Microsoft
2 x Microsoft Xbox One Elite Series 2 Controller
How the “elite” game controller differs from the usual one and how is it better than its predecessor
An advanced game controller at the moment, unfortunately, is rather a luxury that is not available to every player. The Elite series offers the ultimate personalization of the gaming experience, including customizing the functionality with software and external customization. We will tell in more detail whether the Elite Controller 2 is worth its money and how it differs from its predecessor and from more affordable gamepads.
What is included with the Xbox Controller Elite Series 2?
The elitism of the controller begins with packaging. A beautiful box hides a very dense and solid case.
The set also includes documentation, instructions in different languages, a key for a two-week test period of the Xbox Game Pass for new users, and a 2.6 m USB Type-C cable. On the one hand, switching to this connector looks like the right solution, since it is gradually becoming universal. On the other hand, there may be a problem of incompatibility of the new controller with some accessories, for example, Brook X-One Adapter, which allows you to connect the controller to PS4 and Nintendo Swich.
Inside the case is the controller itself, mounted on the charging base, and a set of interchangeable components. In a set: a replaceable crosspiece, two standard smooth analog sticks (differ from preset, more textured), a short convex stick, a long stick and a special tool for adjusting the stickiness of sticks.
We can’t say that these accessories will satisfy the needs of any player, but in general they will allow you to create the perfect setup for different styles of play, and this is one of the main advantages of the Xbox Controller Elite Series 2 over conventional gamepads. In particular, the convex stick seemed to me more convenient to control in racing games, and the long one is great for those who prefer petals to standard buttons.back to menu ↑
Design and appearance of the Xbox Controller Elite Series 2
The appearance of the new controller as a whole does not differ from the previous model, however, the selected materials, their structure, insignificant, at first glance, little things in total create a more rigorous, minimalistic design than the predecessor.
Almost the entire controller, except for the upper part, is covered with soft matte plastic, texture has been added on the sides, thanks to which the gamepad is more reliable and pleasant in the hands. The same textured frame is available on predefined sticks and triggers. Due to the matte finish, the controller easily gets dirty and any speck is more noticeable to it.
The upper, glossy part of the controller has become smaller compared to the first version of the controller, the plastic on the top panel and the power button now contrast less with the rest of the controller.back to menu ↑
What has changed in the functionality of the Xbox Controller Elite Series 2
Most of the significant changes in the appearance of the new version of the gamepad for the Xbox are associated with a change in functionality. Now for triggers there are three modes of pressing, unlike two in the previous version: full, medium and minimum, they are also configured with a switch from the bottom of the gamepad.
Petals – the main distinguishing feature of the Elite series, are shorter, which avoids accidental pressing. The function of the petals remains the same – by default they duplicate the main keys A-B-X-Y. Playing on the petals has become really more convenient, primarily in first-person shooters, where the need to control the camera more precisely is most important.
A nice feature that distinguishes Microsoft controllers from most others is the ability to configure the keys, including the petals. If desired, you can, for example, reconfigure the gamepad so that the petals duplicate the functions of triggers and bumpers, or the cross, which is used in many games to switch combat modes, weapons, or use special items.
The ability to configure a controller profile different from the standard one was in the previous version of the controller. Now, in fact, there are four of these profiles — three customizable and basic, the switch has been replaced by a button and indicators of the selected mode.
Profiles are configured in a special application for Windows or Xbox, which allows you to fine-tune and customize not only the key configuration, but also the dead zones of the triggers, the sensitivity of the sticks, vibration and brightness of the backlight.
The application allows you to configure a huge number of profiles for the controller, but only four of them can be added to the device at a time. An important distinguishing feature is that the settings are saved on the gamepad and when connecting it to another computer or console there will be no need to reinstall the entire configuration. You can adjust the stiffness of the sticks offline using the aforementioned special tool.
Another important difference from previous controllers in the Xbox Controller Elite Series 2 was the built-in battery. You can charge the gamepad directly with a wire or from a charging station, which perfectly exists both inside and outside the case. However, it will have to be recharged infrequently, the device really impresses with the duration of work without recharging. In the third week of active play, I began to be perplexed, marveling at the unexpected and pleasant characteristic of the controller. However, soon with a modest vibration and an illuminated indicator, the gamepad let you know about the low charge level, at which it worked for a couple of days until it was completely discharged.back to menu ↑
Xbox Elite Controller 2 – buy or not
Xbox Elite Controller 2 has virtually no flaws. Claims can only be to a hard enough (especially in comparison with previous controllers) power button, incompatibility of sticks with the previous model, not the strongest magnets of these same sticks.
But the only real possible flaw, or rather, the reason not to buy the controller, is its cost. The average price is 14,000 p., And it is much more than any other gamepad. But it also provides Elite Controller 2 with much more functions, the ability to tailor every detail for yourself and your comfort. Such a need will arise only for a truly enthusiastic gamer who will definitely enjoy the game with the Xbox Elite Controller 2.
