The mini-PC format continues to remain popular: it is better not to find it for solving office tasks. In our editorial office – not the most expensive, but also far from the weakest NUC7I5DNHE from Intel.
More recently, the computer was a large system unit to which peripherals and a display were connected. Today, the entire filling fits perfectly in a compact case, which is slightly larger in size than the 3.5-inch HDD. Actually, read-only memory was one of the most “bulky” components of a mini-PC, but after the appearance of SSDs with m.2, this problem ceased to exist.
Memory to taste
Intel NUCs are a kind of constructors. They already have everything you need – you just need to add “spices to taste”. Most often, as in our NUC7I5DNHE, this is random access memory and permanent memory, as well as the operating system. This approach is logical: mini-PCs are often used for office needs, and different employees have different tasks.
Intel NUC Mini PC Kit (NUC7i5DNHE / BLKNUC7i5DNH1E) Intel Core i5-7300U, Tall, Add'tl Components Needed
- Processor: Intel Core i5-7300U Processor (3M Cache, up to 3.50 GHz). Graphics Card: Intel HD Graphics 620.
- What's Included: Intel NUC Mini PC Kit NUC7i5DNHE (Intel NUC Chassis, pre-assembled with Intel NUC board NUC7i5DNBE; VESA Bracket; AC Adapter; AC Power Cord).
- These components are sold separately: Memory (RAM); Storage (SSD/HDD); Operating System; Keyboard/Mouse; Display/Monitor. All those components are sold separately.
- Includes Intel Wireless-AC 8265 and Bluetooth 4.2 (installed in the 22x30 M.2 slot); 1x Intel Gigabit LAN Port; 1x SATA3 Port for connection to 2.5-in HDD or SSD.
- 4x USB 3.0 Ports (2 on front, 2 on back); 2x Full-Size HDMI 2.0a Ports; Front-Panel Power Button; Back-Panel DC Power Connector (12-19V).
As we already noted, NUC7I5DNHE is not the most advanced, but also not the simplest solution. This is the seventh generation of mini-PCs from Intel – this model uses a dual-core Intel Core i5-7260U processor with a frequency of 2200 MHz. Recall that the letter U denotes a manufacturer of ultra-low power processors, designed primarily for ultrabooks. Indeed, in a compact case it is extremely difficult to place a complete cooling system, so there is no place for hot stones here.
The graphics, of course, are built-in – Intel HD Graphics 640. There are no RAMs included, as we indicated. The description shows support for two DDR4-2133 1.2V SO-DIMMs with a total capacity of 32 GB. The work of RAM in dual-channel mode significantly affects performance (of course, for the better): in younger models, only one channel is available.
As drives, you can use SSD on m.2 and HDD / SSD in the form factor 2.5 inches. Well and, of course, connect external drives if necessary. The hard drive cage is already in place.
For external connections, the NUC7I5DNHE has 4 USB ports, all versions 3.0 have two on the front and rear panels. There are also two HDMI sockets for monitors or a projector. But there is no audio output here: you will have to occupy one of the USB ports with the headphones.
Networking options are traditional here: there is a gigabit port and a Wi-fi module with support for 802.11b / g / n / ac.
We launched NUC7I5DNHE in a configuration with 128 GB A-Data SSD, 2 Kingstone KVR21S15S8 / 8 brackets of 8 GB each and Windows 10. The computer works quite quietly: only one cooler rustles, and not their whole army. If you fix the NUC, as it should be, behind the monitor, the sound of its work in the office room is hardly audible at all.back to menu ↑
What is a mini PC capable of?
We decided to conduct a performance test not in synthetic tests, but on specific tasks. And the simplest of them is playing video in FHD quality. There were no problems at all – no delays or artifacts. The temperature of the unit has not noticeably changed.
Working with images in Adobe Photoshop CC was also relatively easy. The designer noted that such complex tasks as applying filters or effects take a lot of time, but in general you can work. True, if you load the computer with other tasks, this immediately affects the comfort of working with Photoshop.
Finally, games. It is clear that the mini-PCs are not designed for them at all, but there are a huge number of games that are not so demanding on resources – the same Dota 2 or League of Legends. For example, for DotA, the configuration of NUC7I5DNHE in our version is quite suitable for the recommended requirements. We were not too lazy to put the games on the disk, since it does not take up much space. As a result, with FHD resolution and average settings, fps confidently kept above 40. So you should not consider such PCs solely as the lot of accountants and secretaries.
