IPhone 11 Pro Review: Apple’s Best Smartphone

The phone comes with a 5.80-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1125x2436 pixels at a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch (ppi). i

It has been a long time since Apple changed its design tradition and launched the iPhone X. Fans of the brand had to get used to managing gestures and the lack of a Home button, as well as to a noticeable notch on the display – and the new iPhone 11 Pro looks the same like its predecessors X and XS, at least in front.

However, Apple has updated the filling: the main innovations include a faster A13 processor, an improved triple camera and extended battery life. This gave the iPhone 11 Pro the opportunity to immediately get to one of the top places in our ranking of the best smartphones. If we had not lowered the points for the lack of a 3.5 mm headphone jack, then the iPhone 11 Pro could rise to first place.

For the new Apple requires a tidy sum: the basic model of the iPhone 11 Pro with 64 GB of memory will cost the buyer 99,990 rubles. The model we tested with 256 GB of memory costs 113,990, and the version with 512 GB is already 131,990. In addition to silver, gold and space gray, the iPhone 11 Pro is now available in dark green.

Same front panel

So how do you distinguish between two models? Looking at the new iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone X, it is almost impossible to answer this question, at least when both devices are on the back. The diagonal of the display is also 5.8 inches, and in its upper part there is a cutout.

Same front panel

But if you turn both smartphones over, the differences will immediately catch your eye. The new iPhone 11 Pro has the Apple logo in the center, it has a matte rear panel, and three more very visible camera lenses in the upper left corner. They are arranged in the shape of a triangle in a shiny glass rectangle. The iPhone worked as usual, excellent. The matte back panel is of very high quality, in addition, unlike the iPhone XS, it does not catch fingerprints. Only the camera frames protrude slightly.

According to Apple, the iPhone 11 Pro is waterproof. In the new version, it is certified according to the IP68 standard and can withstand immersion in water to a depth of four meters for up to 30 minutes.

Does FaceID function better?

The display of the new iPhone 11 Pro models, like its predecessors, occupies almost the entire front panel, although the frames are still noticeable. The notch at the top of the display is the same size as the iPhone X. Other manufacturers managed to make much less both the width of the display bezel and bangs, but Apple went its own way – in the “bangs” the manufacturer placed all kinds of sensors necessary for FaceID face recognition . This method is based on three-dimensional technology and therefore safer than 2D face scanning.

Does FaceID function better?

According to Apple developers, face recognition should function better with new models, working faster and at large angles. However, in direct comparison with the iPhone X, we did not notice any noticeable differences. You no longer have to specifically hold the device in front of you, because unlocking also works from the bottom or from the side position, but all of this we already know from the iPhone XS. The 11 Pro also automatically activates as soon as you lift it off the table or pull it out of your pocket, and immediately starts scanning.

Cool OLED display

Apple installs an OLED display in its Pro models with a resolution of 2436 × 1125 pixels. With a density of 460 ppi, the 11 Pro screen has excellent sharpness. The maximum display brightness in our standard test turned out to be significantly higher than before – 833 cd / m² (compared to 673 cd / m²). Apple indicates 1200 cd / m², we were able to achieve this value in our test only when we opened a shot of bright light in the image gallery.

Cool OLED display

Neither when viewing in a browser, nor for HDR video in the YouTube application, we got the maximum value. Even when playing HDR video in the Apple-TV application, the display still showed a result of 950 cd / m². But in any case, the screen of the new model is simply extremely bright, so that its contents are visible even when viewed on the street in bright sunlight. Moreover, it almost does not glare. We advise you to use the “True Tone” setting, which is even available with versions of iPhone 8. This function automatically adjusts the display to the ambient light, so that the colors are transmitted correctly regardless of the environment.

The colors on the iPhone 11 Pro look very natural, the white dot of the D65 is almost perfectly normal. In addition, the display 100% covers the large color space of the DCI-P3. This allows you to watch HDR video in full dynamic range. However, Apple does not support HDR in the YouTube app: our measurements here showed only less sRGB color space and not maximum brightness.

By the way, those who liked to use 3D-Touch will have a hard time – the new iPhone 11 does not have this feature.

New camera, new features

The new iPhone first appeared triple camera. Apple, however, is by no means the first manufacturer to offer such a constructive solution: many Android smartphones have long had both three and four lenses.

All three sensors shoot with a resolution of 12 megapixels. In addition to a wide-angle and a telephoto lens with an aperture of f / 1.8 or f / 2.0, respectively, the user will now have an ultra-wide-angle lens with f / 2.4, which allows you to create photos with a viewing angle of 120 degrees.

New camera, new features

The telephoto lens has dual optical zoom and records depth of field information to create a blur effect in portrait shooting. As before, the main and zoom lens have an optical image stabilizer, which should provide less blurry images. Switching from one lens to another works smoothly, color and sharpness remain unchanged – even during movie shooting.

When using a standard sensor, a larger image of the ultra wide angle lens will be displayed in the camera application. This is a very useful option that allows you to see the potential advantage of a wide-angle perspective. But if it’s too late, then within 30 days you will have the opportunity to adjust the angle in the photo gallery in the “Editing” section, this is exactly the time period of the iPhone 11 Pro that stores additional information.

When using a standard sensor,

When you need to quickly capture a moment, and there is no time left to activate the video mode, you can start shooting the video just by holding down the shutter button a little longer (this option is familiar to us from Snapchat and Instagram applications). In this case, the iPhone shoots video in Full HD resolution. In video mode, the iPhone 11 Pro, like its predecessors, shoots at best with a UHD resolution of 60 frames per second – even a 12-megapixel front camera supports this feature. Time-lapse video, the main camera records at a speed of 240 frames per second (fps).

Testing the iPhone 11 Pro: cool photos even at night

Photos taken in our test lab have very nice, natural colors. Even small details and delicate structures, such as hair or yarn, are very distinguishable – even in twilight. Of course, there is noticeable noise. This is confirmed by our laboratory measurements. But small structures are not so prone to softening the optical image.

To improve the quality of photos, Apple again relies on its software. So, for example, Smart HDR, enabled by default, should work even better and, therefore, create more detailed portraits and photographs even in low light conditions. The program selects four frames with different exposure settings and combines them into one HDR image.

Testing the iPhone 11 Pro

Absolutely new in the current model is the night mode, which is activated by itself: the automation illuminates dark subjects for about 3 seconds, you can set the time on a tripod up to 30 seconds. Thus, night pictures become brighter, and much more detail is visible on them. But this mode still can not fully match the level of Huawei P30 Pro.

Deep Fusion snapshot optimization mode has also recently become available. According to Apple, the Neuro Engine makes the best result out of nine shots. Even before the shutter button is pressed, the camera creates 4 frames, and after shooting is completed, another 5 frames.

Speaking of selfies: they also turn out to be of high quality, but the bokeh effect often does not look natural at all, because the program does not always recognize and clearly display the edges of objects. True, the background sharpness can be adjusted in steps after shooting.

Apple’s new A13 processor

In terms of performance, Apple with the iPhone 11 Pro sets new standards – yes, again! The combination of the A13 Bionic processor and 4 GB of RAM provides extremely fast operation of the entire device and excellent graphics performance.

The processor, as well as Huawei’s own Kirin 990 models, as well as Qualcomm Snapdragon 855, which work in Android smartphones, are manufactured using a 7-nanometer process. Its difference from chips made using 10-nanometer technology (for example, A11) is that they work more efficiently and save energy. Apple said the A13 will run 20 percent faster and 40 percent more efficiently.

Apple's new A13 processor

Benchmarks show that the new A13 breaks all records. In GFX, the new iPhones far outperform the currently most powerful Android smartphones. The system responds instantly, and the launch of applications and browser performance are impressive.

Improved autonomy
The battery capacity of the iPhone Pro 11 is 3046 mAh, which is much more than the iPhone XS with its 2658 mAh. Apple claims the iPhone 11 Pro will last 4 hours longer on a single charge. In fact, our online test of Internet browsing time, where we automatically play videos at medium brightness and scroll through web pages, confirms this. The result of 12:27 hours is very cool! Such a long battery life will allow you to use the iPhone all day without recharging even to those users who are used to squeezing the most out of their device.

The charging time of the iPhone 11 Pro is just over 100 minutes – this is also the top value. Because Apple is not supplying the Pro model (finally!) With a weak 5-watt power supply, but is putting a fast 18-watt charger into the kit with the new iPhones.

Wireless charging for iPhones is also available. But they do not possess the so-called Reverse Wireless Charging function (unlike the flagships from Samsung and Huawei). And if Apple developers are already taking a step in the direction of USB Type-C with iPad Pro models, then iPhones are still content with the Lightning connector.

iOS 13

IPhone 11 models ship with iOS 13. The new OS brings with it long-awaited features, such as its own Dark Mode. In addition, it is assumed that the iPhone will be much faster to work with iOS 13. The reason is that Apple is compressing all third-party applications in a new way, which makes them 50 percent less when they first boot than before. In addition, according to Apple, any future updates to the App Store will also be 60 percent lighter.

Good stereo sound
The iPhone 11 Pro sounds very good. The stereo speaker provides a clear, spatial and fairly loud sound. In addition, the new models are also equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 and support fast LTE. With the bundle of new iPhones, Apple has become a little more generous to consumers, providing the new models with an 18-watt power supply, but there is still no adapter for headphones.
