Huawei P40 Pro Review

“Cameras, cameras, and cameras again” is the motto of the Huawei P line. The most stuffed with technology version of the P40 Pro + has not yet gone to Russia, but the P40 Pro has something to surprise: a 50x digital zoom, a separate video camera and a dual front camera with a 3D scanner faces. The Kirin 990 processor is a full-fledged one with a 5G module. Even the coronavirus and sanctions cannot stop the Chinese techno-machine. How is this possible?

3D face scanner and chic body colors

Starting with the Huawei P20 Pro, the flagship design revolves around cameras. The P40 Pro has the world’s largest mobile sensor, its diagonal is 1 / 1.28 inches. Compared to 1 / 1.7 inches, the P30 Pro is a phenomenal growth. Therefore, the camera unit is so impressive. In practice, this does not interfere.

The smartphone received five body colors. Three basic ones (white, black, blue) and two with frosted glass: golden and “Shimmering silver”. We have just the last one, and we seem to have fallen in love: the lid shimmers from white to gray, as if glowing from the inside. Cool effect, be sure to appreciate it in the store. The material is also practical: it does not slip, does not irritate with stains.

On the front is the poured Huawei P30 Pro, until you turn on the display. The glass is now bent on all four sides, but the screen itself does not climb on the edge like a “waterfall” in the Mate 30 Pro, but slightly “numb”. Hence the name – Quad-Curve Overflow Display. The frames are symmetrical, the volume buttons are in place – perfectionists rejoice.

These Huawei experiments seemed a little. Engineers took a “bang” from the Mate 30 Pro, threw out a gesture sensor from there, and inserted all the good into the cutout. The hole is decent, but they retained the 3D face scanner. Firstly, it is difficult to deceive him, and secondly, the face recognizes even in complete darkness. Personally, I am ready to put up with this design for the sake of convenience, but there will be many opponents.

Huawei P30

Another way to unlock it is with a fingerprint scanner under the display. The sensor area increased by 30%, speed – also by 30%. If in the early days of the P30 Pro test we complained about a slow scanner, the new P40 Pro will recognize your fingers instantly.

Protection against water is still at the IP68 level, you can swim in the pool and take pictures, for this there is a separate “Underwater” mode in the camera.

The camera was improved on all fronts.

Huawei P40 Pro received 4 modules in the rear camera. The set is the same as in the P30 Pro: “ultra-wide”, the main one with an RYYB sensor, 5x optical zoom with a digital zoom up to 50x and a ToF camera. But at the same time, all modules are new. What is it like?

Let’s start with the main one. Here the new 50 megapixel sensor is the largest among smartphones, diagonally 30% larger than the P30 Pro sensor and 100% larger than the iPhone 11 Pro sensor. The physical size of the pixels has grown, they receive more light and transmit more detail.

During the day, you can shoot at all 50 MP and crop the picture without loss of quality. In the dark, the need for night mode now disappears in 90% of cases. The picture is immediately clear, bright, no need to spend 4-6 seconds, stand still. He took out a smartphone – took a frame – got a masterpiece. Isn’t that the essence of mobile photography?

In any mode, the new image processing processor (ISP) and wildly productive neuromodule (NPU) help. They complement optical stabilization at 5x zoom. Even with a 50x magnification, the picture on the screen does not run away, getting a sharp shot is now much easier. Not to mention 5x, 10x – there is an iron grip. The TV now has a resolution of 12 megapixels – 50% more than in the P30 Pro.

Improvements – on all fronts. On blurred portraits, borders are more precisely defined, skin tone is more natural, detail is high. Focusing in the dark – for a millisecond, here the P40 Pro outperformed the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which users complain about focusing.

Instead of an “ultra-wide”, now a separate video camera, its name was determined by the “wide” CineWide sensor in 3: 2 format. Exactly such a module is in the Mate 30 Pro. What’s new: there was shooting in 4K with a frequency of 60 frames / s, support for HDR, shooting slow-mo video with a frequency of 7680 frames / s.

In terms of photos – without a breakthrough, it’s still the same high-quality “shirik” with night mode and cool stabilization. The quality is better than the “width” of the P30 Pro, but fewer details fit into the frame.

New feature – Golden Snap. The bottom line: AI chooses the moment for the perfect photo. You just press the button, and the smartphone records a 4K movie with a length of 1.7 s. From a bunch of screwed frames, software selects the best. Take a jumping friend – here is the photo at the top point, and not on the ground, as it usually comes out. Has a man passed behind? He will not get to the final photo. Glass windows showcase? Even this AI will correct. While Golden Snap is not working, we are waiting with updates.

There is only one front camera; let the second ToF sensor not bother you, it is needed to blur the background in portraits. The front camera itself with a resolution of 32 megapixels, autofocus and aperture optics f / 2.2. They improved the quality here: when shooting against the sun, there are less glare, higher dynamic range; night mode highlights even the most hopeless selfies. And there was shooting video 4K 60 frames / s.

Streamlined 90 Hz display

After 120 Hz in the Galaxy S20 + and OPPO Find X2 it is already difficult to surprise us, but in practice 90 Hz is enough for the eyes. Enough for smooth animation, fast flipping without delays and other visual details. In addition, 120 Hz decently loads the processor and eats up 15-25% of the charge. Therefore, 90 Hz is a compromise.

Streamlined 90 Hz display

The diagonal of the display is 6.58 inches, the size is not childish, but you can not name the overgrown Huawei P40 Pro either. It is possible to work with one hand. Behind the compact flagship is the Huawei P40, there are 6.1 inches and a flat display. I know people to whom it is important.

The matrix is OLED with an aspect ratio of 19.8: 9 and a resolution of 2640×1200 pixels. The middle ground between Full HD and Quad HD, again, is a balance between detail and energy efficiency. You can enable Always-On Display. But for some reason the auto-adjustment of white balance depending on the lighting was removed, although the P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro had the “natural tone” option.

The matrix is OLED

The smartphone does not have a top speaker, that is, we forget about films and music with stereo sound. How to call? In conversations, the vibrating display plays the role of speaker. It seems strange, but in fact you don’t notice any difference: you can clearly hear the interlocutor.

The top version of Kirin 990 – for games and more
In September 2019, Huawei introduced the Kirin 990 processor. Two versions were released: with and without the Balong 5000 built-in 5G modem. The flagship Mate 30 Pro arrived in Russia with a “base” processor, but the P40 Pro is already in its maximum version. In addition to supporting all 5G frequencies, the core frequency is increased here and there is a more efficient neuromodule. Here is the difference in the AI test – Ai Benchmark:

In other tests it is impossible to track the difference, in games, too: even the standard Kirin 990 pulls all games at maximum speed without throttling. In the Huawei P40 Pro, 4 layers of graphene are additionally responsible for heat dissipation. The main advantage is the speed of AI, thanks to it it is possible to process photos without loss of quality and confident image stabilization.

We can forget about 5G so far, in Russia there are only a couple of test zones. It would be possible to disperse the Internet in China or Europe to 2.3 Gb / s, but alas – while the borders are closed. But it’s still nice that the work of the 5G modem is not blocked by software, as Samsung did.

From memory: 8 GB of operational, 256 GB of permanent. Normal set for the flagship. The drive can be expanded with a NanoSD card, but in stores the goods are sold out. The second slot for NanoSIM has become free.

It works for a long time, quickly charges. Without wires – also
Here, the Huawei P40 Pro fully copies the P30 Pro: 4200 mAh battery, fast charge 40 W, fast wireless charge 27 W and reverse – 2.5 W. From 0 to 100%, the smartphone charges in an hour, and at least Mate 30 Pro lives with a 4500 mAh battery. The display frequency of 90 Hz does not greatly affect the flow:

My smartphone easily survives until the evening, which is already there until the morning. Then half an hour at the outlet, while I have breakfast, and 70% rush. Enough for a working day, the smartphone has excellent autonomy. The reviews of the owners of the P30 Pro confirm this, I have not seen a single complaint on the forums.

The eternal question – what about Google services?
P40 Pro runs on Android 10, it is an open source OS, no one will take it away from Huawei. But American applications belong to specific companies, they are forbidden to cooperate with Huawei, so some services on the smartphone do not work. The most sore point is Google services, without them the Play, Maps, YouTube, Gmail and other programs application store will not start.

P30 Pro

You can get navigation from Yandex, and enter your mail through the built-in client. Everything else is looked for in the Huawei brand store – AppGallery. What is missing – download as an APK and install manually. This is most conveniently done through ApkPure. These are official methods. Unofficial, with the installation of Google Play – were, but covered. Surely come up with new ones.

Regarding payment by smartphone: Huawei Pay now supports only two banks, but the company promises to quickly find an alternative. Now you can snap almost any card in the beta version of the Wallet application. We tried to pay through it – it works.

In a life without Google, all you need is a YouTube Premium subscription, documents, and sync with Google Photo. Applications based on the Google Maps API do not work (CityMobil, for example). The rest is replaceable.

I heard about the Huawei P40 Pro +. What kind of beast?
The top flagship in the P40 line, claiming to be the best camera phone of 2020. There are 5 modules in the main camera, two of them are televisions: one with 3x optical zoom, the second with 10x. The camera covers an insane focal length of 18-240 mm. And for dessert – 100x digital zoom and 40W wireless charging. Like a wire.

The smartphone was not presented in Russia (expensive), but, we hope, will appear this year. We will try to get a review.
At first glance, the Huawei P40 Pro is a minor update to the P30 Pro. But in detail, this is a completely new flagship: curved glass from all sides, chic colors, a 90 Hz display with a notch, inside which is a 3D face scanner with IR illumination. The Kirin 990 5G processor appeared with powerful graphics, insanely fast AI and worldwide support for 5G networks.

  • Powerful quad camera with 5x optical zoom
  • The front camera shoots perfectly in any conditions
  • 4K 60fps video recording on all cameras
  • Bright 90Hz OLED display
  • Powerful processor and lots of memory
  • Quick charge by wire and without
  • Quick unlock, even when scanning a face in the dark
  • No stereo speakers
  • Hard to find NanoSD memory cards
  • Google services do not work
  • Large cutout for selfie camera

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
