In December, we already told you about the new series of laptops ASUS ROG Strix Scar III. Then we were tested on the older version – on Intel Core i9. Today we’ll talk about a slightly simpler model based on the Intel Core i7-9750H.

Appearance

In order not to drive you to the previous text, let’s go over the main points again. The G731GW is a high-end 17-inch laptop. The case is assembled from durable matte plastic, only the top cover is taken away with metal. The general style does not change from version to version: strict forms, bevels from below for convenience, a minimum of decorative elements. The latter includes illumination: the Republic of Gamers logo and the 4.5-mm strip at the ends of the case shimmer with all colors. The brightness and glow pattern are configured from the application, there are hotkeys for basic adjustments. The overall dimensions of the machine are modest 2.6 cm in thickness, 40 cm in width. The weight is solid, but within reason – 2.85 kilograms.
The connectors are grouped conveniently – on the left and behind the screen. In the near access USB version 3 and a 3.5 mm jack for a headset. Two video outputs, power and an RJ45 jack are placed on the rear end so thick cables do not interfere at hand. The right and near ends are free, nothing prevents the manipulation of the mouse.
The screen is suspended on semicircular hinges. Unlike the standard “book” type, these mechanisms have hidden in the case. It looks beautiful, and it works perfectly: the cover is securely fixed in any position and does not shake with active typing.

The matrix is good: 17.3-inch Full HD IPS, 144 Hz refresh rate, 3 ms response. 7.5 mm wide frames do not interfere. For a small indentation vertically sacrificed an integrated webcam. Do not be upset: they put a separate camera in the kit, capable of driving Full HD at 60 frames / sec. The quality is more than good – it’s quite possible to broadcast in Twitch. In the pluses, we also write that the camera can be hooked to the screen as well as put on a tripod.
Control
The keyboard is full-sized, complemented by a digital block. The side of the island keys is 15.5 mm, the stroke is 1.6 mm, although the response is already fixed at 0.8 mm. This is fulfilled by the proprietary Overstroke function, which provides early key response and accelerates input. Owners of large brushes will be pleased: a distance of 3.5 mm between the keys is enough to minimize typing errors. There are five separate buttons for controlling the laptop: two for the volume, and one for the microphone, fans and a proprietary shell. All keys are equipped with a pleasant RGB backlight.

On the right side is a removable Keystone keychain with an NFC chip. It opens access to the protected partition on the disk and loads the profile with personal configurations. Setting options with key protection is done through proprietary software.
The touchpad is comfortable: a large rectangle (108×59 mm) and a pair of large (12×35 mm) buttons with a soft stroke. Perfect for both games and typing. In addition to the laptop, the ROG Gladius II gaming mouse with a sensor resolution of up to 12,000 dpi and interchangeable switches is attached.

Internal organization

The notebook has a good filling: the six-core i7-9750H processor, capable of operating at a frequency of 2.3 to 4.8 GHz, is complemented by an RTX 2070 graphics card with 8 gigabytes of GDDR6. In 2D mode, the signal is displayed on the monitor by the integrated video card UHD Graphics 630, which increases the battery life. RAM 32 gigabytes. She scored a pair of 16 GB modules DDR4-2666 MHz manufactured by Hynix. There are two drives: for the system a 512-gigabyte NVMe SSD from Intel and a terabyte hard drive from Seagate.
The cooling system is classic: three branded radiators with a large set of thin (0.1 mm) fins installed in the rear of the case dissipate heat. A pair of powerful turbines with 83 blades each is responsible for blowing radiators. Heat from processors, video memory and power systems is removed by copper plates and five heat pipes.
There are two network controllers. Realtek is responsible for wired Ethernet, wireless Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 5.0 are based on Intel Wireless-AC 9560. MIMO 2×2 technology is supported, antennas are evenly scattered on the sides of the case. This ensures good signal reception regardless of the position of the laptop.
The sound path is based on the Realtek ALC294 codec with an amplifier and a pair of emitters. They were located on the sides of the case, the channels displayed on the left and right ends. The emitters play clean and juicy, there are hints of bass. They freely voice a room of 10-15 “squares” or a workplace in a noisy office, do not rattle at high volume.

Test results

The combination of the six-core i7 and RTX 2070 works well in games: with rare exceptions, at high quality settings it is consistently more than 50 fps, only Control and Metro Exodus due to the activation of ray tracing, the performance dropped slightly lower. Light games like World of Tanks and F1 2019 show more than 100 frames at high settings, which is good for demonstrating all the advantages of the 144 Hz matrix.
Branded software Armory Crate works as a command center. From it, you can control performance, monitor temperatures and fan speeds, set color schemes and backlight brightness, reassign keys, load additional programs, configure the system response to a Keystone key.
Testing in games revealed perhaps the only drawback of SCAR III – increased noise during operation. The six-core processor heated to 82 degrees, the RTX 2070 – to 77. To achieve these temperatures, the fans had to be transferred to the “turbo” profile in Armory Crate, which automatically brought them to a maximum of 6000 rpm. It’s difficult to play in this mode, aerodynamic noise decently decays on the ears. If you use the “balanced” profile, then comfort is added slightly, and temperatures increase by 3-8 degrees, depending on the type of load. The RTX 2070 graphics processor accelerated under load to 1890 MHz, in 2D the frequency dropped to 300 MHz.
In standalone mode, the central processor does not accelerate above 1.3 GHz, power consumption is kept at 15 watts. The frequency of the video card does not exceed 1140 MHz. With these values, the SCAR III runs for one hour on an 4200 mAh battery with an active load on the processor or video card. As a multimedia station, it will last longer – from 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on the load.
